The Man Rules

Copied and pastes from an email via Nicole Diva:

The Man Rules
At last a guy has taken the time to write this all down

Finally , the guys' side of the story.
(
I must admit, it's pretty good.)
We always hear
' the rules ' from the female side.

Now here are the rules from the male side.

These are our rules!
Please note.. these are all numbered '1 '
ON PURPOSE!

1. Men are NOT mind readers.

1. Learn to work the toilet seat.
You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down.
We need it up, you need it down.
You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports: It's like the full moon
or the changing of the tides.
Let it be.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question..

1. Come to us with a problem
only if you want help solving it. That's what we do.
Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument.
In fact, all comments become Null and void after 7 Days.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are.
Don't ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways
, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something
Or tell us how you want it done.
Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials...
1.

Christopher Columbus did NOT

need directions, and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings.
Peach, for example, is a fruit, not
A color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have
no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched.
We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say 'nothing,' We will act like nothing's wrong.
We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine...
Really .

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as football, motor racing or
golf.

1.. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape.
Round IS a shape!

1. Thank you for reading this.

Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight;

But did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.

First off, StarWars.com release a "Best of 2008" list. Here are some highlights:

For fans of the Steampunk culture, this artist makes custom figures, dioramas, props and sculptures of some geek cultures (Star Wars, Marvel, historical legends, etc.). The link above takes you to his Steam Wars: A NEW HOPE line, and there are links for the other two films from the original trilogy after you get there. I'm excited to see his prequel line. Dude's also got a great re-imagined SW line.
This TIE Fighter was made from 1 tall lid (check front), 10 coffee boxes, 12 sample cups, 37 grande cups, 63 drink sleevs, and 216 stirers. Automatic AB Stamp of Dopeness.

Lastly, I'll leave you with some Star Wars cuteness...

*A random fact about myself: In my sophomore year of high school in Mr. Allbee's class, Brad, Jordy and myself created a Star Wars-themed National History Day project about the special effects the movies had created and how it affected the rest of cinematic SFX work. We went on to the State competition. Sadly, I don't have any pictures of the work, but that was my favorite school project ever.

Slowly worked up to the starting weight and kept going from there. Used the hook grip- very uncomfortable, but helped tremendously in making sure I could hold the bar long enough to get it on my shoulders in rack position. Jesse was coaching and telling me to go heavier as I worked with Tony. Mind-fucked myself with the big weight because this was the first time maxing out singles with olympic lifts. Oh well, it's a great start.

@ Urban

Press 5-5-5
Deadlift 5-5-5

I warmed up thoroughly to build up to each. Essentially you work up to a weight, find it challenging then repeat 5 reps for three sets.

Press 54kg (118.8lbs)
Deadlift 120kg (264lbs)

With Craig's coaching, we were able to identify why I lose my back in the deadlift nearly everytime. I feel so much stronger and more stable now and I feel like I'm going to PR this Saturday at the competition at Local's Gym.

Anyone else interested in going? It's going to be like a CrossFit Total, except the overhead press is replaced with the bench press. Details can be found on Facebook at this link.

Today's rain

How frackin crazy is Washington's weather right now? Snow, wind, rain. I can't wait until we have record heat waves [/sarcasm].

Anywho, if you've ever been to my gym you'll know I usually park on Lake City Way just outside the building. It crosses 100th Street and is sort of at the bottom of all the landscape. Anywho, the parking was fine when I arrived. A quick workout and 45 minutes later I came out to my car almost being swamped:

Was feeling rushed so they're blurry. This better be the closest I get to being flooded.

I actually like this rain. The end.

WOD 07JAN09

Since reading Starting Strength [buy] I've wanted to include more strength workouts into my programming. Bench pressing was my agenda today, but it's very difficult when your bench is comprised of plyo boxes, rubber flooring and a mat. Instead John and I scrapped that idea and went old school old-world and did floor presses. Warmed up with the bar and slowly added weight doing 5 reps until I felt the workout had begun.

Floor Press 5-5-3-3-1-1

155 - 157 - 195 - 200x1 - 200 - 200x2

This was more difficult that I had imagined for two reasons: 1.) I don't bench often- only during "LYNNE" 2.) Floor press : Bench press :: Deadlift : Back squat. The beginning of the exercise starts in the concentric phase of the contraction so you get no benefit "bounce" during the lift. Shitty.

Anywho, I mind-failed my second set of 3 and then after focusing and concentrating on my last single, John told me to go again and I did. After a couple seconds (and loss of focus AGAIN) he told me to go for a third, but I laughed and dropped the weight. My mentality has got to change with the heavy lifts. Luckily I'm deadlifting @ Urban CrossFit tomorrow and will be starting a strength program with him next week starting with low-trap back squats!

GI

When it comes to health problems, I would have to say I get throat illnesses the most. For a long time I had constant GI problems. Sore throats would be indicative of soon-to-happen colds, heartburn, the lack of breathing through my nasal passages, more sore throats, and then there was that one time (Cinco de Mayo 2007) I had pharyngitis and ended up at the UW Med Center's ER. The problems were fixed and soon faded away as soon as I changed my nutrition- I went from sugary and acidic foods to finally balancing things out.

Recently with the colder weather I had taken up drinking hot cocoa and coffee again. I probably have about 4-6 mugs of coffee per morning and this week I've felt 'that feeling' over and over again. Even now, as I sit here, I think I COULD throw up. Not going to, but that's what it feels like. I need to start drinking more water and more tea again.

Luckily I am also doing quite well on the nutrition aspect of it all. I thought about posting everything here to the blog like Craig does, but that's waaay too much for me. I haven't simplified my meals that well yet. Soon, but not yet.

On a random side note, I started GTA: San Andreas again and I'm almost done with all the San Fierro missions.. Jet pack here I come!

This weather we've been having recently is ridiculous. These winds right now make me feel like I'm in that movie Twister and I'm going to see a cow fly by the window.

Lupe Fiasco's side project?

So the internets are reporting that Lupe Fiasco has a side alternative/punk project called Japanese Cartoon. Sounds like him, but then again there was a post on their MySpace blog:

>>>> Amidst The Rebuild & Stun, Clarification.

Japanese Cartoon’s myspace page has been hacked.

Percival Fats (Born Percival Hindenburg-Fats) Is NOT Lupe Fiasco (Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco). Although he is a dear friend.

Japanese Cartoon will reload songs onto the player as soon as we figure out how via the technical support fellows at Myspace.

Please DO NOT disseminate their music ILLEGALLY.

These guys have worked very hard and placed a large amount of energy and financial dedication into this project.

Lupe does finance the band but is NOT I REPEAT NOT THE SINGER IN JAPANESE CARTOON. He is however the producer and we value his participation very much.

We will not be taking any friend requests until this security matter is cleared up as we might not be able to keep this page.

My top two tracks would be "Love Song For No One" and "Neon":

I finished out with 'as many reps as possible in 60 seconds: seated pike press'. My score was 39 (PR). I could've pressed more had I rested a little longer after the WOD. Oh well, at least the ball is rolling now!

I almost gave up mentally while warming up. Since I was the only one in the gym I almost decided to NOT work, but cursed myself and then went straight into the WOD after 15 squats, situps, back ext and dips on the parallettes.

Post-WOD Nutrition:
Usana Protein chocolate shake (30 min after last lift)

I'll be working out with Coach at CrossFit Seattle hopefully once every two weeks, and with Craig over at Urban CrossFit twice a week.

Two-thousand and Nine

this post is not finished yet.

My specific goals* and how I'm going to accomplish them:

MIND
  • Get back into a positive mindset. For far too long I've let too much negativity get to me and it's lead me to the places I'm at now. Not good. Wording has got to change- dreams = goals, etc. More smiling! I have to keep that PMA all the time. I have to be happy about everything all the time, no matter what.
  • Dedicate myself back to #1. The balance between my concern for myself and my concern for others is out of whack. As obvious as it should be, I have to look out for myself first and foremost because I haven't been doing that much at all in the past year. I've got to stop dreaming because it's time to wake up and face reality. I've been too comfortable for too long and that's fizzed me out. I'm boring and never excited and I don't want to be- it shows outwardly and it's not attractive. Once I do more for myself, my happiness will exude and it'll naturally help me help others.
  • Start learning again. I need to be a student once more. Whether it be getting trained again by Coach Dave @ CrossFit Seattle, attending school myself (!), or just reading again. I am going to read at least 20 pages a day five days a week. More if time permits and I'm sure it will.
BODY
  • Eat healthier using Paleo methods, then moving into the Zone diet towards the second half of the year. I will allow myself one cheat weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) per month. Because I haven't really started weening myself towards this style of nutrition, I will have to slowly transition throughout January and the first half of February. I will be attempting to have three meals and two snacks a day. I'll also play around with Intermittent Fasting to see if that produces better results than that of the Zone. The basic premise is this: "Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little startch and no sugar."
  • Nearly-complete sobriety. I will allow myself one drink per cheat day. They can rollover (if I don't drink Friday and Sunday I can have three drinks on Saturday). Special occasions must be planned for, so no calling out. I do not give into peer-pressured drinking at all because I've done this before and can do so again.

SPIRIT
  • I need to either go back to church or start meditation of some sort. Find something to strengthen my will because it's definitely weakened. Learning helps, as does music.
Until this past year, I haven't really realized the whole "so much change can happen within a year", but I can say that 2008 was my development year. I had a gist of who I really am, why I am, and what my virtues and beliefs are while being comfortable enough to share any of that with family, friends and complete strangers.

* I reserve the right to say one thing with complete conviction and say "Fuck it" and go back on my word the next. That's life. I DO understand the difference between people who do that often and people who do that because situations change. I am not going to be the former.

22 December 2008

A slightly negative introspective

I keep telling myself that this is the calm before the storm.

What happened? I fell off and somehow became comfortable with being, in a sense, on the ground. I've been walked all over, kicked, ignored and frowned upon. You think that'd be enough motivation to pick myself back up and get things rolling again, but there's nothing. This is the lowest point I've ever hit.

I'm not faking everything, but I'm content. I know that I shouldn't be comfortable with this position, but regardless of what I say, do or think it remains. Am I not surrounding myself with the things I need right now? Is it visa versa? Why do I let myself remain uncomfortable (in the long run) for this temporary "happiness" (for lack of a better word). It all lays on me and I know it's my doing (or rather, undoing) this to myself. Where'd my motivation go? Why am I sitting on my hands waiting for something good to happen when the only real way to do is to get out there and take it myself?

Many thanks goes out to all of my friends who support me, who hold me up, who take care of me and let me know what they think about me and about the things I do. If not for you I would've completely given up a long time ago. Some time ago, a newfound friend pointed something out to me about who I am, even though we weren't close. She told me that "[I'll] never be happy because although [I] act confident, [I] only stay within my comfort zone." I took offense to that, but obviously that means there's truth to it. I tried to lie to her (and myself) immediately and retorted that she didn't know me. I'm sure we both knew right then that she was right.

I know that my friends also don't approve of a lot of other things I do, but for whatever reason don't confront me about it. Dudes- I'm stubborn as shit. Please... if I do anything that isn't right tell me. Don't save face. Tell me straight up before I get too deep. Before I'm fucked up beyond my own good. I hate when people beat around the bush. A couple of things are particular- I hear about how "[I'm] fukcing dumb." or "[I'm] a fool." Wow. Thanks for letting me know. All I ask is that you tell me straight. Please.

New year, new chances. New opportunities to take advantage of. Every year I say to myself "tabula rasa", but rarely do I really mean it. I don't usually need it. This time I do and it's too important to brush off. My future depends on the movement I do or don't do today.

I'll be posting up my actual list of goals to accomplish another time, but these are a couple of things I need to do: look out for #1 and make real money again, if I am working on my dream then it's got to take the backseat because my livelihood has suffered enough due to previous sacrifice, prioritize and chop off what I need and what I want, get my health game back up high- workouts, nutrition and knowledge, etc.

I need a fire under my ass.

Weird rant/emo post, I know.

I just need to vent more.

The Original Rice Krispies Treat

From the official Kellogg's site.

Ingredients
  • 3 tbsp butter or margarine
  • 1 package (10 oz) marshmallows
  • 6 cups Kellogg's Rice Krispies
  • a whole lot of love (optional, as I prefer angst)
1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

3. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day.

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS:
In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above. Microwave cooking times may vary.

Note

For best results, use fresh marshmallows.

1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow crème can be substituted for marshmallows.

Diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine is not recommended.

Store no more than two days at room temperature in airtight container. To freeze, place in layers separated by wax paper in airtight container. Freeze for up to 6 weeks. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.

Kellogg's has reduced the sodium content of Rice Krispies to meet current consumer flavor- and nutrition-preferences. Rice Krispies Treats made with the lower sodium cereal taste great without any added salt, but, if you desire, add 1/4 teaspoon salt to the butter before melting. Continue with recipe as directed.

The next Metal Gear?

This screenshot appeared on the Konami's Kojima productions website. They've used the "!" plenty of times within the games, but is that the letter "i" or is it an upside down exclamation? It's obvious that the last symbol belongs to the Xbox.

Could it be a hint to a Metal Gear Solid (or just Metal Gear?) game for the iPhone? They used plenty of Apple products in MGS4: Guns of the Patriots. Are they porting any existing games to Microsoft's gaming console? Only time will tell...

Spaghetti Carbonara

from GQ Magazine, December 2007. Props to Dom for catching it and making it first

Absolutely Authentic Spaghetti Carbonara

(serves two)
1/2 box spaghetti
hunk of pancetta or thick-cut bacon
extra-virgin olive oil
2 eggs
parmigiano-reggiano
salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. put the pasta into lightly salted boiling water

2. put a handful of pancetta, cut into quarter-inch matchsticks, into a frying pan over medium-high heat. add a tablespoon or two of olive oil

3. while the pancetta and spaghetti are cooking, break the eggs into a mixing bowl. pick a good bowl since you'll be using it both to prepare and to serve the spaghetti. add half a handful of freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano and a pinch or two of pepper. beat the mixture together, only enough to combine everything evenly.

4. since the pancetta will take only about five to ten minutes till it's nicely browned, turn down the heat to low until you're ready to assemble the dish. when the spaghetti's done, strain it and add it to the egg mixture in the bowl. add a small handful of cheese and toss the mixture well with a couple of forks until the spaghetti is coated. a lot of people put the pasta in the pan with pancetta, Pesce (Pietro Pesce, chef of Hostaria Romana- the creator of this recipe) says, which ruins the delicate flavor of the sauce- and you'll end up with scrambled eggs

5. immediately turn the heat back up on the pancetta for 30 seconds, until it's sizzling, then pour off about half the fat. dump the pancetta and remaining fat onto the pasta and sprinkle with more cheese and some pepper. let it sit for about 30 seconds before mixing- if the pancetta's too hot, the sauce won't blend well.

6. serve yourself in a clean bowl and give the bowl the pasta was mixed in to your guest- this is the orginale, which has the good stuff at the bottom and is considered good luck. as for you, you can whip up fine pasta in fifteen minutes. who needs luck?

Star Trek 90210

Y'all know I'm a big STAR WARS fan... and so I naturally disliked STAR TREK, but never gave that mythology a chance. Maybe that'll change once the new Trek movie comes out.

It better be like this dammit. Don't disappoint me Abrams!

WOD 12DEC08

CrossFit Seattle's "12 Days of CrossFit" WOD

for time, rep-scheme works like the carol goes:

1 100 yard sprint
2 bear crawls (approx 30ft)
3 sec handstand
4 db clean & jerk, 40lbs
5 dive-bomber pushups
6 k2e
7 kb swings, 24kg
8 hanging leg raise (toes to bar)
9 ring dips
10 squat thrusts
11 pullups
12 rocking pistols

36:54

Last year my time was 42:20. I was so much stronger in everything BUT the running. How lame, I would've had a time in the 20-odd min mark. Well at least I know my real GOAT now. Time to get on it a beat it up! I'm going to workout more regularly with Coach Dave at CrossFit Seattle and also Craig at Urban CrossFit. There's another goal to add (AND ACCOMPLISH!) in 2009.

Anywho, dope times. Brady, Ann-Marie, Chris, Hyphen, Max and Dwinson joined in the festivities and got in a good sweat. Great potluck afterward- meats and cheeses, caprisi, veggies, fruit, noodles, etc... and while everyone was drinking beer I drank a ROOT beer!

Training starts now.

I have full support and trust in McG now. He and the cast will hopefully give us a great chapter in the Terminator universe and not a Charlie's Angels 2.

The Lonely Island

Their newest joint (click here to watch the widescreen video)

... and apparently the first single from their long-awaited album INCREDIBAD.

Dan and I have been fans of The Lonely Island for a long time now. From their failed tv pilot Awesometown to them joining the staff of Saturday Night Live! Andy is obviously the feature player. Jorma and Akiva are part of the writing staff. Good thing they joined, SNL was going downhill. Anywho, they're funny dudes.

download: The Heist - Incredibad. "CHAMOMILE MOTHERFUCKAH!"

Speaking of INCREDIBAD here was the ACTUAL first single from their overdue album:

The Bing Bong Brothers - "Wait":

Speaking of SNL, an update on that 9-year-old relationship advice dude:

They have some real gems, but some misses too.

Some of their gems:

"Dick In a Box"

"Body Fusion"

"People Getting Punched"

"Natalie Raps"

ladies: Sarah Shahi

De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao

Pacquiao took the W at the end of the 7th round when De La Hoya said he could not continue because Pacman was "too fast". The Filipino was, in fact, too fast. The shorter southpaw was too unconventional (see: New School), his hand-speed too quick. De La Hoya brought in plenty of amazing trainers to come in, but he had too many and they were too conversed in the older approach to training. Fighters of today have much more resilience, better conditioning and more energy. Freddie Roach had the right idea that speed would be the defining factor in deciding the victor. The Pacquiao vs. Diaz fight was nearly the same. Diaz said "he's just too fast!"

Manny Pacquiao is a durable fighter- one who can take a beating, preserve his energy and release havoc when he feels necessary. De La Hoya couldn't hold up- he falls back on dealing punishment in the fight and hopes to finish them early. A strategy for the De La Hoya camp was to stand tall. It would exploit the only real weakness Manny had- being shorter. I that I think if De La Hoya's reach was longer, he would've had greater confidence and would've landed more punches.

From the start of the fight to the end of the 7th round, Oscar could not keep up with the Filipino fury. He didn't seem to have his head in the game after actually exchanging a few punches. Great fight. These two didn't give their footings at all.

Thank you for passing the torch Oscar. Manny will definitely carry it with pride.

"Strange I have not... Forseen this.."

Too many quotables in this one. I love G4. Numerous STAR WARS quotes and they play them so inappropriately.

Props to Hyphen

The Sith and the Dark Side are so pause worthy.

WOD 05DEC08

Today was Chris' birthday.

"In Honor of Chris"

5 rds for time:
5 deadlifts, 135lbs
10 hang power clean & jerks, 135lbs
15 sec overhead active shoulders, 135lbs
20 sec handstand
25 knees-to-elbows

30:24

Damn this one hurt. I think I pulled something in my back because it's going crazy right now. The cleans were definitely the hardest part. I breezed through everything else, but would then get caught up by the knees-to-elbows. My midsection is getting weak!

PUAs keep getting younger

Word to Sheena for the post.

hey it's me!

Advice for relationships:

The right thing to do when you have a crush is:
  • Never show off too much
  • Don't be silly and goofy
  • Control your hyperness (cut down on sugar if you need to)
  • Make sure you have good friends who won't try to take the girl you like.

Finally, you have to be able to get over a crush if it doesn't work out. A crush is like a love disease. It can drive you mad.

Try not to let it get you down.

WOD 01DEC08

First workout in a while.

21-15-9 reps, for time:
ohs, 95lbs
pullups

4:13

I've done this workout before and I tied my previous time. I should've murdered that, but I haven't been up on my fitness tip. The overhead squats were surprisingly easy. I did butterfly pullups and those weren't hard either. Putting them together slowed me down. Then again I haven't worked out in over a week, nor did I warm up prior to the lift. I was hoping I wouldn't get injured and HEY! I didn't!
