this costs $1286. DAMN.

And here is the awesome television commercial that goes along with it. The dude is obviously NOT Bruce, but just imagine. This would be THE definition of dope!

The Nutcracker

From November 28th through December 30th The Pacific Northwest Ballet presents Stowell & Sendak's 25th Anniversary of The Nutcracker.

Tonight I'm going to see it for a friend's birthday celebration. The ballet is based on the story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Although what is seen on the stage today is different in detail from the original story, the basic plot remains the same; The story of a young German girl who dreams of a Nutcracker (who becomes a Prince) and a battle against a Mouse King.

It's a classic! Maybe I'll write a review.

Happy Birthday Bruce

Bruce Lee (birth name Jun Fan) was born on today's date in 1940. He was an American martial artist, philosopher, instructor, martial arts actor and the founder of the Jeet Kune Do combat form. He was widely regarded as the most influential martial artist of the twentieth century and a cultural icon.

He was also my greatest influence in life.

Handwriting

via Tita's blog I saw this cool little test online about your graphology. Anyone who knows anything about the PUA society knows how important this skill can be, so yeah. Haha..

My Results:
Andrew Bueno, your handwriting reveals that you are down-to-earth and sensible.

You remain cool and calm in most of the situations and do not tend to over-emphasize on anything. You love taking initiatives, but at the same time you never rush into anything.

Does this sound like me? Tita and I had the same results. Those who have seen my handwriting, does this make sense? I always write in print and it's very legible. People usually comment on my handwriting when they see it, especially when I'm doing the personal training thing. My signature looks like a lifeline and I purposely did that. Hmm. Cold reading is funny.

WOD 18NOV08, 20NOV08

The 18th

5 x 5 of the "CrossFit 9" all with 95lbs, for form: squat, front squat, overhead squat, press, push press, push jerk, deadlift, sumo dead-lift high-pull, and squat clean.

This is a pretty dope workout when I don't feel like exerting myself too much. Form felt good on everything. My olympic lifts are feeling a lot smoother than before, I just wish we had some proper bumpers. Handstand practice as a finisher.

----

The 20th

I taught class on Tuesday how to properly do handstands, so I've been doing a lot of practice with those. Took out the parallettes and did 5x5 handstand pushups, working on form and range of motion.

20 November 2008

QBert drumming

The Filipino DJ god shows off some of his turntable drum skills. So ill.

Good afternoon

It just hit me that I haven't regularly slept before midnight since April or so. How sad. I'm pretty sure that's the biggest hit in my health other than lack of proper nutrition, which is pretty simple:
  • Eat meat and vegetables, seed and nuts, some fruit, little startch, no sugar.

My dinner last night consisted of soup, pizza rolls and white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies. Last night was good though. Mmhmm. I got a workout in too (I'll post that in a second). I must've had more than 10 cups of coffee yesterday- I went to Uptown Coffee, Panera Bread, The Great Northwest Soup Company, Whole Foods and North Seattle Community College's little coffee bar.

I met up with Shannon and we had lunch and a real talk. Fun times, I miss hanging out with her.

I also got Yeezy's new album. I like what I've heard so far, I kind of listened through it once and then I uploaded it to my iPod, but I really want to LISTEN and absorb it as an album. Maybe during lunch I'll sit in my car and listen. I'm back working Thursdays JUST for this week and next week because they're going to shorten the hours of operation at Banya (!) due to lack of business. Blame the economy, right?

Gotta run, work calls.

Pretty cool, but I wish it was more dope (see: staying on point)- but they're old so I guess it's okay.

The "Hey Ya!" breakdown was gold. The "Hot in Herre" stripping was funny, yet disturbing. Do they know where they're doing?!

WOD 18NOV08

Front Squat
9 sets of 3-reps, for max loads

165-175-185-195-205-215-235x2-245x

I mentally let it get to me towards the end. My biggest weakness is my lower back and front squats definitely psych me out. I probably should've warmed up. This will be one of the goals of 2009.

Later that evening (midnight to be exact), I decided to run the inner loop of Greenlake (2.8mi) for fun. I didn't time the run as I was just trying to get my mind elsewhere while listening to some tunes.

Three reasons the picture above is sexy as hell:
  • She looks GOOOOOOOD and I like her hair.
  • What she's wearing. Mmm mmm good.
  • (seeing this from a trainer's POV) She's in the bottom of a squat and looks fine doing it.
Oh the things I would do to her..

I stayed up pretty late to watch these [alone )=] but damn- it's cloudy, foggy and the moon's out. Not to mention I live in a city so the light pollution did not allow me to see anything.

WOD 14NOV08

from CrossFit Bellevue:

Jason Freiwald began his career at Seal Team Five and then transferred to Seal Team Three just after the attacks on the World Trade Centers. Upon returning from his tour of duty in Afghanistan Jason began the demanding six month selection for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. On September 11th, 2008 Jason and John John Wayne Marcum a fellow Seal came under heavy fire from both Taliban and Al-Queda fighters near the Pakistan border. Despite intense enemy fire Jason and John assaulted forward and pressed the fight. Both died within moments and within feet of each other. They were swim buddies in life and they were faithful to each other in death. Swim buddies are never more than six feet apart and Seals never leave men behind. Both of these men were highly decorated warriors who had survived over a thousand high risk missions. Jason Freiwald was our friend and we miss him. Today lets never forget that people risk their lives for us not because they have too but because they want too. Today lets forget about politics and simply raise our glasses and salute the men and women who have and who continue to serve.

"FREE"
3 rds for time:
400m run
21 squat cleans, 95lbs
21 burpees

22:12

I didn't know where the 400m run was because Leilani decided leave Marc and myself alone in the gym. I should've asked before she left. I've fallen in love with squat cleans within the past month. So that was probably my favorite part. Burpees sucked as always. This WOD definitely felt good though, maybe because I had to run by a whole bunch of lady gymnasts when I did my run shirtless! (;

Horizons

I can say that the past year has been really invigorating not because anything went well, but because I learned a bunch (and am still learning). I [mostly] know who I am and what I want. That alone right there makes things easier to do. This whole "Do you" thing is stupid. Of course you're going to do 'you'. 'You' might include following trends and saying this, that and the third, but don't we all follow trends? "Do You" is a g'damn trend. Shutthefuckupalready. Stop boasting (see: oversaturated swagger) and get on with yourself. Good job inspiring others, but it's getting annoying. But I digress. I know I get can get on the negative tip and linger there a while.

I'm at this age where you do find out exactly what you want: who you want as friends, what you enjoy doing, eating, buying, seeing, and where you want to be. Although I've mooched and been a leech (my bad) for a minute, being down here at the bottom shows you some real shit. Sadly, I'm one of those types who really need to fail to succeed. As Ammery observed I'm really "extreme". I've been saying passionate, but they're really one in the same. When I'm happy and excited I'm REALLY happy and excited. When I'm calm, I'm reeeeally calm/relaxed/monotone. When I'm jealous, I'm a hater. When I'm angry, please don't come near. When I'm sad, I'm damn near depressed. But that makes me me. I'm transparent and I suck at hiding my feelings. The problem I've been having is not being in those positive moods more often like I should. I'm not busy so I somehow become REALLY not busy (make sense?).

Alas, the reason I write this post. After waiting and waiting for my little gym that could to grow and become bigger, I have the opportunity to expand it into a bigger (on all scales) business. We're looking to move our affiliate to the South Lake Union/Eastlake/Capitol Hill area as soon as we find a box, aquire proper equipment and finalize a business plan. Exciting times.

Last year when the opportunity arose, I jumped in head first because I was realizing my dream of owning and running my own facility. I didn't care that it was small, in an awkward location and "raw". It was mine and I was proud. The trouble was that I quit my job that kept me financially safe (it paid very well) to run my facility full-time. Little did I think that we were going to have to build from ZERO and that it was going to be a slow process. I started feeling the hit financially, which was always my biggest weakness. I didn't care though, I was living my dream. All the trouble I put my family and friends through, please know that I'm going to get right and take those worries off of your shoulders. This is going to be my dream realized. It's going to take a lot of hard work, but anything that's worth it is (right?). This past year was a huge lesson for me and I believe that I know what to do now. It's the concept I always talk about: Failing Forward. No one successful ever gets it right the first time and there are no such things as being lucky. There are only hard workers who want it. Those who have determination and g'damn it, now I've got it.

WOD 10NOV08

10NOV08

I had planned for the class to do a strength workout and learning the bent press, then everyone started complaining. I was going to put them through the "300" workout to show how much stronger REAL CrossFitters are, but they were still complaining. In honor of the Marines' 233rd birthday, Linda and I created a workout for them right then and there:

"233"
for time:
25 pullups
25 thrusters, 45lbs
25 duel kb sdlhp, 20kg
25 k2e
25 kb swings, 20kg
25 ohs, 45lbs
25 cal on the C2
25 ring dips
33 burpees

14:28

It was actually kinda easy. I had energy for afterward. Need to take more initiative and do more work when I know I can.

Kung Fu Panda

I'm watching Kung Fu Panda at Sammee/Sheena/Tiff's and in the movie when someone passes away (see: becomes one with the Force) a whole bunch of blossoms from a peach tree engulf them. At that moment I reminded Mikey of the ending boss fight from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater where Naked Snake fights The Boss in the field of Cherry Blossoms. Sheena and Tiff both exclaimed "Geeks.". YEAH, SO?!

I then asked Sheena if I could borrow her laptop to IMDb the cast. Then I promptly googled a picture of the MGS3 boss fight:

Which brought me to the reason I posted this. This picture above is part of an article about someone's favorite moments in the Metal Gear Solid series: Metal Gear Solid - My Favorite Moments.

Kung Fu Panda is a dope ass movie btw. Does anyone know how to get mp4's onto a 16gb 4th gen iPod nano? I got a black one a week ago and I've downloaded a bunch of movies, but they "can't be put on" says iTunes. wtf.

Sam took this because she said we look like little kids

You can see me in the above picture actually blogging this.

WOD 09NOV08

Power Clean 1-1-1-1-1-1-1

140-145-150-155-160-165-170

I hate these types of workouts because even though there is no time-limit, I still feel "rushed". That and I don't feel like I had a workout afterward. Maybe I'm not warming up properly. After the second set with 145lbs, I felt my grip losing out. Hook grip really helps with holding onto the bar. My last two sets were iffy due to some ugly ass landings.

09 November 2008

WOD 08NOV08

Yesterday Dwinson, Mikey and Tony went out to the grand opening of CrossFit Bellevue (in Factoria, haha) to show support to the new affiliate. They have a great facility and an even greater staff. Anywho, they didn't really have a group workout planned because they wanted to just do demos, but since we were there they threw us into one:

Rowing "Helen"
3 rds for time:
500m row
21 swings, 50lbs
12 pullups

11:something

Sadly we didn't break any of their gym records. I also ripped my callus on my right hand, where I had a blood blister from the other day. We did, however, impress them with our work ethic and especially our form on our movements. No one at CFB had a butterfly kip yet, or had seen kipping pullups to the chest as a standard (see: Mikey the Gorilla). It was good times, not to mention they gave us a whole bunch of stuff for $Free.99:
  • Emerald City Smoothie
  • Kirkland brand water
  • Subway sandwhiches
  • Usana TenX Blast anti-oxidant bars
  • more food
  • free workouts
  • and a CrossFit Bellevue shirt.
Dope. I wish my other gym members would've came out to see our diversity. We were just a gang of young asian/brown men. Regardless, they would love to have us back. One of the trainers named Gabe really wanted to do another workout after all the socializing and skill work. So a whole bunch of us did

4 rds for time:
15 ab-mat situps
10 knees-to-elbows

3:47 (or something)

I totally forgot to write down my results. This workout sucked too. That and all the ladies finished before any of the guys did. How humbling. They also had a CrossFit Kids program that was unbelievably amazing. I would always hear about it and see it online, but it's so different in person. What these children do is inspiring. It makes me give hope that not all kids are going to end up unfit and obese. I would really want to get Mikey certified for that because he's already working with kids and kids seem to love the dude. There were little 5 year-old girls doing multiple strict pullups and 18-inch box jumps at a height of 3 feet. There was another young girl named Jessica who owned everything and competed with the adults AT 13 years of age. I would love to take her and her brother Daniel as my Padawan Learners and teach them all the little tricks I know.

Good times, but I was shaky, weak, tired and sleepy for the remainder of the day. I didn't even want to go out anymore, so I just chilled at Marc's joint. Enjoyed a gin & tonic and a Blue Moon and called it a night.

Props to Gabriel

Egh

I don't know if it's the climate, but my right has strangely been cold. And no, I'm not doing "the Stranger". It moves slower than usual and the touch sensitivity seems to have numbed. I am right handed, but even keeping my hands in my pockets doesn't seem to help. Even at Banya in the steam room, parilka and the hot tub my right hand feels cooler than the left. I'm still not eating that much, could it be lack of nutrients?

Is it possible that because I left my ring on my right-hand index finger when I rode the mechanical bull last week it feels this way? I know it hurt immediately after and became swollen, but could that have led to future complications?

Maybe I should stop wearing my ring?

WOD 05NOV08

thanks for going at this WOD with me bro

as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes:

10 pullups
10 thrusters, 65lbs

13 rounds + 10 pullups

At first I thought this would be an easy workout because it's a gymnastics movement (my specialty) along with a "light" weight-lifting movement*. DAMN did that weight get heavy with the quickness. If you've ever done a workout involving multiple thrusters then you have my respect. Thrusters are front squats followed by a push press and they are a bitch. It's almost the polar opposite of rowing, movement-wise and there is such a metabolic/muscular strain on your body. I also got a blood blister:

you should actually see Linda's hand.

I had some motivation to use today, but working out doesn't make me as happy as it once did. I really think my nutrition (or lack thereof) is fucking my shit up. Blahblahblah...

*CrossFit organizes all movements into one of three distinct catagories:
  • Monostructural Conditioning (aka "cardio) - Movement rhythmic in motion and use the oxidative energy pathway [Ex: running, rowing, biking, swimming, jump roping, etc.]
  • Gymnastics - Using the body as the main mode of resistance. The aim is body control [Ex: squat, pullup, pushup, dip, sit-up, back extension, burpee, rope climb, etc.]
  • Weight Training - Using an external object as the main mode of resistance. [Ex: anything that utilizes a tool- dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, sledge hammer, tire, kids, etc.]
We mix these up in various (if not random) ways. That way we work on both our strengths and weaknesses limits.

Dammit Hyph. I swear to God that I came up with that blog title (even though that was easy). I was at the War Room for the Election Night Party and it was pretty dope. I went alone, not really expecting anyone to come out, but caught a whole bunch of people as time went on. A couple even said they came out because of me. Niiice. After feeding my ego, as well as my stomach (kinda- WHAT UP BARACKY ROAD!), I stood and watched the projection of MSNBC covering the results as they came up. If you noticed, I started and added a Twitter account and was updating and texting people like a madman. I also drank which wasn't a good idea since I didn't eat all day. Nor did I bring my camera with me. After the west (see: best) coast polls closed, we knew who was the next President-Elect and everyone was celebrating. I knew wearing my favorite blue boxer briefs would bring us luck! Eileen & her friends, Paperboy Productions dudes, Grynch, Amber & Aaron, Marc, PJ, Tita & her cousin Anna, Tiff, Sheena, Sharla, Mark and Kristina all came by and we watched as Obama came out for his speech:

Waaaaay too much fun. Kristina bought me a straight Red Bull Cola (review coming!) and I downed the shit out of that citrus-y draink. After his speech the DJs started KanYe's "Good Life" and it became a dance party. Good times singing and grooving with fellow supporters and drunkies. As soon as Tita uploads her pictures, I'll update this entry with more pictures. Someone ended up spilling beer on my white Obey 'Obama Progress' shirt so I had to put my jacket back on. Bad idea: I started sweating profusely. After everyone else bounced and Sharla, Tita and Mark jacked the last of the posters, we decided to all leave. BUT WAIT! A mob of folk were walking up Pike just outside of War Room heading towards Broadway. We all looked at each other in agreement and joined in. I ran back to get my camera and by then all of Seattle was celebrating:

Election 2008: Seattle Street Celebration from ABueno on Vimeo.

Everyone was exciting honking, beeping, yelling and congratulating one another. I was thinking that people might get rowdy and the SPD would have to come in and we all know the stories about them and crowds. "Herds have two speeds: graze and stampede." Whatever, I was out on the streets of Capitol Hill with the Obama breatheren partying:

And jumping for the hell of it:

Election 2008: Seattle Street Celebration - Jumping for Joy from ABueno on Vimeo.

And I met these characters:

GOTCHA AMBER! / Boobies for Obama!

If it wasn't for him, the chick above would've kept her shirt on. I haven't decided if that was a good idea or not.

Taboo from BEP. hahaha

I high-fived them and they hugged me

These guys kept offering me beer whenever I walked by

If you ever see this, TRADE ME PICTURES!

Dude was dope. He got the crowds roaring

Everyone was having a good time, and luckily no one was getting too crazy or out of hand. It became Vegas for a second when everyone bought beer and champagne and drank on the street, but most were doing it safely and without belligerence:

After separating from the rest of them to go around and take random pictures while meeting random people, I went to my car to see if it was free to leave because I had parked in an area where people were celebrating. I would've been within the police blockade. After waiting 10 minutes the blockade moved up, freeing my car and allowing me to leave. The party was still going strong and both Hyphen and Marc told me it was all over the local news. Big shouts to Randi and Drew repping for the Queen Anne Hill street party! I called up my mom and filled her in on my day. She reminded me of her magical ESP powers and how she envisioned Obama standing in front of the White House with his wife and girls behind him. She then realized I was talking on the phone while driving and promptly hung on my ass. She's happy though.

Obama becoming the first African American president was not only a gleam of light and hope for the USA, but for the world. We have proven again that we, as Americans, are progressing and moving boundaries forward. We show that although we have our differences and disagree on many things we stand as one. This is our first step into a bright new future for the next generation. Hopefully he becomes the world leader we know he is and inspires everyone across the globe. Hopefully we become the nation to prove that we support and develop these types of leaders.

Yes we can. Yes we can.

Quicksand

OK... the monster is awake
It won't rest until there's nothing left
Maybe ever and anon
I forget about the pain
Someone bending light comes along
Flowers lean towards the sun

Some people fall in love and touch the sky
Some people fall in love and find quicksand
I hover somewhere in between
I swear
I can't make up my mind

Election Night Party @ The War Room

In support of the next president of the United States of America, the War Room will be hosting an election night party complete with large screen projections with multiple live tv feeds, a bunch of seating and a bunch of food (and drink specials!). Free Baracky Road ice cream, are you serious?! GOODS will also be there selling special limited edition t-shirts to commemorate the event. The rooftop will be open. They'll be serving the new Red Bull cola. I'll be there. You should be too. This is too important to miss.

yumbo yack that was fast

October went by quick, yeah? This week blew by as well. First, a quote:

"Change is sometimes the most painful thing we have to do, but also could be the best thing you never knew you needed" - Gabriel

Really though, I need to slow down right quick:
  • Wednesday - Fusion with Sammee. Drank too much, Pizza Ragazzi afterwards
  • Thursday - Cowgirls Inc. with Mel and Marc. Rode a mechanical bull for the first time and kicked it's motherfuggin ass. My index finger became swollen )=. Drank too much, Honeycourt afterwards
  • Friday - Halloween! I went to Bremerton to catch up with Joe, bought our onesies at Target, met up with Dwinson and drove back to Seattle. Dressed up and prefunked at Marc's and we all headed out to Baltic Room. Drank and danced too much. Denny's Jack in the Box afterwards, where I proceeded to buy myself waaay too much food.
  • Saturday - First day back to work in a long time. Directly after work went to War Room with Mel and the folk, chilled because it was so relaxed. Then out of nowhere it became a full house. Talked to random folk on the roof and then bounced out and met back up with Mel over at Venom. Dope shit because of daylights savings! 1am repeated and we had an extra hour to drink.. sooo dope. Drank (not as) much, hot dog truck near War Room, then down to chill in Renton.
  • Sunday - Banya to detox and relax. Too bad it's busy season. And too bad it's Sunday aka "Family Day", so I had these little shits running around, being loud and splashing around in the pools*. So much for relaxing. I accidentally fell asleep on a bench. Sam came by after her lunch date and we chilled. Not drunk, Red Robin afterwards. Great conversation as usual.
This week seems like it should be good. I just need to stay busy, I'm relapsing back into this sad mood. This time of year really makes me feel alone. But yea, the election is coming, the gym is going well and I'll hopefully be selling a big PT package soon, catching up with old friends, I'm reading for fun again (WHAT UP SPL), N. Seattle is about to see me, Evening Magazine is doing a story on Banya 5, maybe Fusion with Sammee again, going home to hang out with my moms and pops, work, and, of course, the weekend.

* If I could, the next time someone decides to fucking cannonball when I'm sitting on the bench next to the cold plunge when I'm obviously in a state of meditative peace (shown by my upright posture, lack of movement and closed eyes) I'm going to take a dry venik, beat the shit out of you, and then start shoving it up your ass until you scream "I'm sorry" in Russian.
